Aromas is a small unincorporated community and census-designated place that straddles Monterey and San Benito counties. It sits near the Pajaro Gap at the south end of the Santa Cruz Mountains, a rural-feeling spot between larger coastal and inland job centers. The settlement was once called Sand Cut, named for a Southern Pacific Railroad tunnel built nearby in 1871.
