Arthurtown, SC

Arthurtown is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in western Richland County, pressed between Columbia and Cayce. The 2020 census counted 2,294 residents. South Carolina Highway 48, also known as Bluff Road, runs through the CDP, leading about three miles northwest to downtown Columbia and south toward Gadsden. That puts Arthurtown in a very particular spot: close to the state capital’s jobs, institutions, and traffic, but still a named community rather than a separate city. The boundaries are mostly metro-edge geography, with Columbia on three sides and Cayce to the south. Bluff Road gives the place its clearest local reference, and Bluff Road Park provides county recreation nearby.

The community’s daily map is tied to Richland County services, Columbia-area schools and errands, and the roads that carry people between the river corridor and the capital. There is no separate municipal downtown to define Arthurtown, so the local feel comes from proximity and persistence—an older named settlement holding its place inside a rapidly connected urban area. Arthurtown is not far-out South Carolina; it is the bit of western Richland County where the Columbia metro becomes a neighborhood landscape.
