About Asbury Park
Springwood Avenue and the oceanfront preserve two intertwined chapters of Asbury Park's music history. The West Side corridor was the center of the city's Black community and a stop on the Chitlin' Circuit, with clubs that hosted performers including Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington. Built in 1956, the Turf Club is the only surviving structure from more than a dozen Springwood Avenue venues; it joined the New Jersey Register of Historic Places in March 2025, while the Asbury Park African-American Music Project continues to collect oral histories, photographs, and recordings and hold community programs. To the east, the resort that James A.
Bradley founded in 1871 developed around its beach, boardwalk, amusements, and performance spaces, including the Convention Hall and Casino complex introduced in 1929. Asbury Park counted 15,188 residents in 2020, and the July 2025 estimate was 15,632. Across this 1.43-square-mile city, 2020–2024 estimates put owner occupancy at 27.7 percent, the median owner-occupied value at $581,100, monthly mortgage costs at $2,619, and median gross rent at $1,722. Daily community activity still converges on the mile of beach and boardwalk, where recreation includes swimming, a surfing-only area, fishing, mini golf, a splash park, and two beach playgrounds that do not require a pass.
Ramps and mobile mats reach the sand at every beach entrance, and adaptive beach chairs are available in limited numbers. Away from the water, the public library runs separate adult, teen, and children's event calendars, streams media through Hoopla, provides notary service, and even lends beach badges. The Asbury Park station adds a practical regional connection: NJ Transit's March 2026 North Jersey Coast Line timetable lists service through Long Branch toward Newark and New York. Together, the waterfront, downtown, and Springwood Avenue place recreation and music history within a compact city rather than in a detached visitor district.
