About Ashippun
At the 2020 census, Ashippun was a Dodge County census-designated place of 1,166 people in the town of Ashippun, about seven miles south of Neosho on Wisconsin Highway 67. The community is really two names in one: Ashippun and Old Ashippun. That split follows the settlement history, with the older village's store, post office, and farm families set apart from the later spread along the highway.
Old Ashippun's Meissner Store is the kind of building that lets the whole place snap into focus. Gustave Meissner's general store was the community's first commercial enterprise and one of the township's earliest surviving post offices, serving a largely German agricultural population before rural mail delivery. The store began as a false-front building in 1873 and grew through additions into the 1940s. The post office is still part of the place's everyday map. That old address still matters locally. Ashippun has the highway address and the postal number, but Old Ashippun keeps the old village center visible.
