Ashland, PA

Ashland is a Schuylkill County borough in Pennsylvania’s anthracite region, with a small portion extending into Columbia County. Settled in 1850 and incorporated in 1857, the borough took its name from Henry Clay’s Kentucky estate. Coal shaped the town’s streets, work, churches, and immigrant neighborhoods, while rail lines carried anthracite from the surrounding hills. Ashland sits northwest of Pottsville, in a landscape of steep ridges, mine land, and small valley towns.

Today the borough’s historic district and the Ashland Area Historic Preservation Society Museum keep that coal-region story visible. Pioneer Tunnel Mine and the Museum of Anthracite Mining offer a hands-on connection to the work that built the local economy, while nearby roads lead toward Pottsville, Mount Carmel, Shamokin, and the wider Schuylkill Valley. Homes, churches, shops, and school routes fill the modern map, but the old mining geography is never far away.
