Assumption, IL

Assumption sits in Christian County’s flat central Illinois farm country, a small city whose name is more southern than its prairie setting. The settlement began as Tacusah, laid out by the Illinois Central Railroad in 1852, then gathered around the newer name Assumption, taken from Assumption Parish in Louisiana. The old history describes a landscape of swampy ground, tall grass, and few roads before the railroad gave the town a street grid. That change — from difficult prairie travel to a planned rail town — is the basic shape of Assumption’s story.

Railroad-era institutions followed: churches, stores, a post office, and local schools filled in the blocks, while farming supplied the surrounding economy. Assumption School District No. 9 served the community until 1992, when the city joined Central A&M School District with Moweaqua and nearby rural areas. The 2020 census counted 1,155 residents. Today the town’s routes lead through fields toward the small communities around Christian County, but the old Tacusah name still adds a second layer to the map. Assumption is a place where a railroad plan, a Louisiana parish, and central Illinois agriculture meet.
