Athol is a Smith County city founded during the first settlement wave of north-central Kansas. The Kansas Historical Society's post-office register records the office's establishment on February 9, 1888, after the earlier Corvallis office moved there. The community is now within Thunder Ridge USD 110, a rural district serving Smith County communities from its headquarters in Kensington.
