Atkins, VA

Atkins is a Smyth County CDP in Southwest Virginia, along the old westward route through the Holston Valley. U.S. 11 passes the community, with I-81 nearby carrying traffic through the mountains. The area’s location between the ridge lines and the valley floor gives Atkins a travel-oriented geography: farms, roadside businesses, and homes line a corridor that has connected eastern and western Virginia for generations. The Middle Fork of the Holston River and nearby ridges add a second layer to the road landscape, with water, stone, and mountain crossings close together.

Old Stone Tavern, also called Rock House, is the place’s standout historic landmark. Built by Frederick Cullop before 1815, the two-story limestone tavern accommodated travelers moving toward Cumberland Gap and Kentucky. It is one of the oldest stone buildings in Smyth County and was listed on Virginia’s historic register and the National Register. Today, Atkins is a small residential and highway community, but the tavern keeps the older road story visible in the landscape.
