Atlantic Highlands, NJ

Atlantic Highlands immediately stands out for its hillside setting rising straight up from Sandy Hook Bay. Down along the water, the busy municipal harbor is packed with boats, waterfront dining, and the Seastreak ferry terminal, which runs daily trips directly into Manhattan. A couple of blocks inland, First Avenue provides a classic, walkable main street full of local bakeries, craft breweries, and neighborhood shops. Above the downtown, quiet residential streets climb the slope, lined with well-kept Victorian homes. At the very top sits Mount Mitchill, giving residents sweeping panoramic views of Sandy Hook, Raritan Bay, and the distant New York City skyline.

The town first took off in the late nineteenth century as a seaside retreat for New Yorkers escaping the summer heat by steamboat. That history is still visible in the borough's architecture, especially in the hillside neighborhoods where sprawling Queen Anne houses and wrap-around porches overlook the water. While the old steamships are long gone, that easy connection to the city remains one of the community's biggest draws. Today, the high-speed ferry lets commuters swap a hectic highway drive for a relaxed morning boat ride into Lower Manhattan.

If you are looking at homes here, the steep terrain is something to keep in mind. Hillside properties often come with terraced yards, unique construction considerations, and steep driveways, though they balance that with coastal breezes and fantastic views. Day-to-day life revolves around the outdoors, with the paved Henry Hudson Trail giving cyclists and joggers a scenic path along the waterfront toward Popamora Point. Between the harbor, the downtown eateries, and the county parks up on the ridge, the borough packs an incredible amount of charm and convenience into just over one square mile.
