Atqasuk, AK

Atqasuk is a small Iñupiat village of around 275 residents along the Meade River on Alaska's North Slope, roughly 60 miles southwest of Utqiaġvik. It sits inland on the tundra, where freshwater fishing and caribou hunting remain central to everyday life. The area has a long history of traditional camps and early coal mining, but the modern community took shape in the late 1970s when families moved back to settle permanently along the river.

Living in Atqasuk means adapting to a quiet, close-knit lifestyle where residents look out for one another. The local Meade River School serves students from preschool through 12th grade, and a neighborhood clinic handles primary medical care and emergency response. A village store provides groceries, fuel, and everyday household supplies. With no roads connecting Atqasuk to the outside world, the local airstrip is essential, hosting regular flights to and from Utqiaġvik for cargo, mail, and regional travel.
