Attica, MI

Attica is a Lapeer County census-designated place in Attica Township, north of Interstate 69 and near Elk Lake. William Williams built a sawmill here in 1851, and lumberman I. N. Jenness helped shape the settlement that followed. The first post office opened as Mill Station in 1867, changed to Elk Lake in 1870, and took the Attica name in 1871. The Attica Hotel, first called the Williams House, later held the post office and a ballroom before the building moved to Crossroads Village.

Attica’s location keeps it connected to the roads and services of southeastern Lapeer County. Interstate 69 is about four miles south, with access at Exit 163, while the community’s post office still uses ZIP Code 48412. Elk Lake remains the local geographic hook, a reminder that the settlement’s postal name changed even as the lake and township stayed put. Attica is a Michigan crossroads with a sawmill beginning, a layered post-office history, and a small community center set among the farms and woods north of the interstate.
