About Atwater

Atwater is a Kandiyohi County city that began with a railroad contractor’s store in the summer of 1869. Before the village took shape, the post office sat near Summit Lake; the settlement itself went by Summit Lake, Stockholm, and Gennessee before being named for railroad official E. D. Atwater. The village incorporated in 1876, then grew around stores, churches, a hotel, and the depot. A 1891 fire wiped out much of the business district, but Atwater kept rebuilding.

The old railroad town still has some good touchstones. The Atwater Hotel, saved and renovated for city offices, police, and library use, and the old Strong Garage, now an arts and event space, show how the city has reused its earlier buildings. Kingery Field and the Atwater Chuckers keep baseball in the local mix, while the ACGC school district connects Atwater with Cosmos and Grove City. Atwater is a western Minnesota town with a railroad skeleton, a history of fires and farm changes, and a habit of finding new uses for what it already has.
