Atwood, TN

Atwood is a Carroll County town built along a railroad line four miles southwest of Trezevant. The place was established in 1872 on land owned by J. H. W. Cage, who became its first postmaster when the post office opened that same year. Early Atwood had general stores, a cotton gin, gristmill, sawmill, and Methodist and Baptist churches. The town’s 1941 incorporation formalized a community that had already spent decades serving farms in western Tennessee.

The railroad is still the clearest way to picture Atwood’s beginning: cotton, timber, mail, and passengers moving through a small station town. The old industries have faded, but school life continues through West Carroll Special School District, formed in 1981 by consolidating Atwood and Trezevant special districts with nearby elementary schools. The district serves Atwood, Trezevant, McLemoresville, Cedar Grove, and Lavinia. The 2020 census counted 1,008 residents. Atwood remains a place where county roads, school routes, and the memory of its mills all point back to the railroad settlement that started it.
