Auburn, MI

Auburn is a small Bay County city in the Saginaw–Midland–Bay City orbit, settled in 1854 and incorporated as a city in 1947. Its post office first opened under the name Skinner in 1869, then took Auburn in 1877. That old mail-route detail gives the place a good local hinge: the city grew from a settlement surrounded by Williams Township into a separate community with its own civic name, even as the larger Bay City region remains close.

Midland Road ties present-day Auburn together. Bay City Western Middle and High School sit in the city, while Auburn Elementary and Auburn Area Catholic School give it a school-centered local map. Western High’s campus serves about 1,200 students and offers art, drama, band, world languages, career-technical courses, and dual-enrollment opportunities. The city is small, but its school footprint is substantial, and the old Skinner name survives in postal history, not on a sign at the center. Auburn works as a Bay County place with a clear split personality: a former settlement with a nineteenth-century post office story and a current school corridor that connects it to Bay City Public Schools.
