Auburn, NE

Auburn is the Nemaha County seat in southeast Nebraska, at the meeting of Highways 75 and 136. The 2020 census counted 3,470 residents. The city grew from three earlier places—St. George, Sheridan, and Calvert—and was formed in 1882 when Sheridan and Calvert joined forces. The railroad had put Calvert on the map, while Sheridan worried about being bypassed; together they secured the county seat in 1883 and placed the courthouse square between the two older town centers. That split personality remains visible in Auburn’s streets.

Downtown Auburn still has the courthouse square, a Sheridan commercial area, and the Crestview business district farther south. The city park’s Avenue of Flags honors Nemaha County veterans, and Auburn has held the Tree City USA designation since 1976. The local historic district includes the Nemaha County Courthouse, an old opera house, churches, post office, and Legion Memorial Park. Nemaha Valley Museum keeps the agricultural and household history close at hand, while Auburn Public Schools and the city’s recreation programs fill the current calendar. Auburn feels like a county seat assembled from rival railroad towns—its multiple centers are not a flaw to smooth over; they are the reason the map makes sense.
