About Augusta

Augusta is the Woodruff County seat on the east bank of the White River, and its story starts with boats before it gets to trains. Thomas Hough laid out Chickasaw Crossing in 1848 at a natural river landing, then renamed it Augusta in 1850 after his niece, Augusta Cald. When river traffic faded, residents built a railroad connection to keep the town tied to the wider network. The Cache River National Wildlife Refuge is headquartered in Augusta and protects wetlands along the Cache and White rivers. Augusta is Arkansas Delta geography in one glance: river landing, county-seat role, rail pivot, and bottomland woods.
