Augusta, MO

Augusta is a St. Charles County town of 270 residents in the 2020 census, perched on rolling hills above the Missouri River in the state's Rhineland. Heinrich Knoernschild, from Tiefengrun in Germany, founded the town in 1836, and Augusta incorporated in 1855. Vineyards and wine-making became the lasting local signature: the Augusta American Viticultural Area was recognized in 1980 as the first federally designated AVA in the United States, two months before Napa Valley.

The town's current map mixes winery tasting rooms with restaurants, antiques, specialty shops, a museum, brewery, bed-and-breakfasts, and the Katy Trail. The trail follows the former railroad right-of-way, with the old MKT station site at mile marker 32 providing a stop for cyclists and walkers. Harvest Festival and Christmas Walk give the calendar a seasonal rhythm, while Highway 94 connects Augusta to St. Louis in about an hour.
