Aurora, IL

Downtown Aurora has a distinct layout shaped by the Fox River, which splits the city into east and west sides with Stolp Island sitting right in the middle. Back in the 1830s, early settlers set up a sawmill along the river bend, and as towns grew on opposing banks, the island in between became a shared hub for city halls, shops, and bridges. Today, that riverfront geography gives downtown a charming, walkable feel. Main streets like Galena Boulevard and Broadway carry you past historic brick storefronts, lively plazas, and scenic bridges, including the classic New York Street Memorial Bridge with its World War I monument sculptures.

The city’s history is visible on almost every corner. Aurora boomed during the railroad expansion of the late nineteenth century, and in 1881 it became one of the first cities in America to install an electric street lighting system, earning it the lasting nickname the "City of Lights." That era of growth left behind impressive architecture throughout Stolp Island and the surrounding blocks. The historic 22-story Leland Tower, once a luxury hotel, still anchors the skyline as an apartment building, while the stunning 1931 Art Deco Paramount Theatre remains the cultural crown jewel of the downtown strip.
