Aurora, SD

Aurora is a Brookings County town three miles east of Brookings, with 1,047 residents at the 2020 census. The town was platted in 1880 and took its name from Aurora, Illinois, through a settler who had come from there. Brookings County's early railroad map listed Aurora as one of the stops established in 1879, so the town began as part of the rail-and-settlement line that shaped eastern South Dakota. Today, the short drive to Brookings is just as important as the old track, putting larger services and jobs close by while Aurora keeps its own municipal name.

Public education is handled through Brookings School District 05-1, and the city describes local children as being bused to Brookings for school. That arrangement captures Aurora's current role: a small town with its own streets and civic calendar, closely connected to a larger neighboring city. The surrounding roads lead through Brookings County farm country, while Brookings supplies the bigger commercial, college, and school network. Aurora's local character is therefore a blend of railroad origin and modern proximity. It is a place where the town boundary remains distinct even as daily routines cross into Brookings.
