Auxvasse, MO

Auxvasse is a small Callaway County city on U.S. 54 between Mexico and Kingdom City, named for the creek that runs through the northern Missouri landscape. The town began as Clinton City when it was platted in 1873, but the railroad depot took the nearby Auxvasse Creek name and the newer name won out. A post office followed in 1874, giving the settlement a lasting identity tied to both the rail line and the waterway. North Callaway County R-I schools keep the community connected to the surrounding farm country.

Today U.S. 54 does the practical work that the railroad once did, carrying people between county roads, Mexico, and Kingdom City. Auxvasse has the shape of a small Missouri town rather than a big commercial center: a main route, houses and businesses gathered near it, and open land spreading out beyond the limits. The creek is still the best clue to the name, while the old Clinton City beginning adds a small twist to the town’s history. Auxvasse is a place built by transportation, named by water, and kept together by its school district and northern Callaway setting.
