Named after the mythical island from Arthurian legend, Avalon got its start in 1882 when Richard Dempsey Yow and his brothers opened a general store along the railroad. The community grew around that business, officially incorporating in 1909 as a small, self-sufficient depot town with its own school, post office, and church.
