About Averill Park

Averill Park is a census-designated place within the town of Sand Lake in Rensselaer County, east of Troy. The 2020 census counted 2,098 residents. Route 43 runs through the community south of Crystal Lake and east of West Sand Lake, and the name comes from the local Averill family. Before the hamlet became a suburban crossroads, the Wynants Kill fed wool and cotton mills, knitting factories, and a busy mill economy. Crystal Lake gives the place a second life beyond the old mills, with the shoreline and former summer-resort landscape still part of the local picture.

The 1891 flood ended much of the mill era, but the Sand Lake Baptist Church and other older buildings keep the earlier town visible. Averill Park School District ties the community to neighboring Sand Lake hamlets, while Route 43 handles the daily run toward Troy and the Capital Region. Averill Park is a lake-and-mill place with a family name, an old industrial creek, and a lot of local road history packed into a small corner.
