Avoca, AR

U.S. 62 crosses Avoca in the Springfield Plateau of the Ozarks, about six miles northeast of Rogers and between Rogers and Pea Ridge National Military Park. The Benton County town’s history is a story of moving routes. A post office opened at a stagecoach stop in 1872; in 1881, when the Frisco Railroad chose higher ground for its line, Albert Peel moved his store and post office beside the tracks. By 1888 Avoca had a depot, general stores, a blacksmith shop, grain warehouse, and school. The name is generally linked to Avoca in Ireland, through the Peel family’s connection to the name.

Rail and farm work expanded the settlement. Around 1900, apple evaporators and a stockyard made the depot an important commercial stop in Benton County. By 1912 the town had general stores, a drugstore, cooperage, vinegar and lime plants, and later two canning factories. The apple crop declined and Rogers became the larger center; after U.S. 62 was paved west of the rail line in 1934, surviving businesses moved toward the highway. Schools consolidated with Rogers in 1929, a reminder that Avoca’s services have long been tied to its larger neighbor. Beaver Lake changed the regional map after the White River dam was built in 1960, extending the reservoir into Benton County and drawing visitors toward Rogers and Avoca. Residents incorporated the town in 1966, and a gravel quarry opened east of town that same year. Today the local mix includes stores, automotive businesses, an antiques shop, churches, and the quarry, with the Rogers School District serving public schools. The town’s official calendar also makes room for volunteer events and a September community picnic. Avoca’s identity sits between U.S. 62, the old rail corridor, North Beaver Lake, and the commercial orbit of Rogers.
