The town got its start in the 1880s as a stop along the Missouri Pacific Railroad, taking its name from Ireland’s scenic River Avoca. The biggest highlight of the year is the Quack-Off, an annual tradition held on the last Saturday of January. Since 1980, locals and visitors have packed Avoca Park to watch live ducks race down the tennis courts, with proceeds supporting the volunteer fire department. The park itself was built through community fundraisers and neighborly teamwork, reflecting the down-to-earth spirit that makes this small town feel like home.
