Avon, SD

Avon is a quiet, tight-knit town in southeastern South Dakota's Bon Homme County with deep prairie roots. Founded in the late 1800s, the community shifted a short distance around the turn of the century to sit right along the arriving railroad. History buffs often know Avon as the birthplace of longtime U.S. Senator George McGovern, who spent his early childhood here. Today, it retains a classic small-town atmosphere where neighbors know one another and life moves at a comfortable, unhurried pace.

Daily life revolves around local schools, active community groups, and a compact Main Street. Highway 50 runs just along the northern edge of town, making it easy to commute to nearby regional hubs while keeping residential streets peaceful.
