Aynor, SC

Aynor is a Horry County town that grew from Eyknor's Farm into a railroad terminus and then a U.S. 501 crossroads. Jacob Eyknor settled here in the mid-1800s; the railway's arrival led to incorporation in 1913. Tobacco, cotton, and turpentine shaped the older agricultural economy, while U.S. 501 now runs through town toward Conway and Marion. The town is also home to the tribal office of the Waccamaw people, a present-day Native institution on the local map. The annual Harvest Hoe Down keeps the agricultural past visible each September. Aynor is a South Carolina town whose story moves from farm, to rail stop, to highway community.
