The village has deep roots as a getaway from New York City. After rail service arrived in the late nineteenth century, Babylon quickly transformed into a fashionable summer resort filled with bustling waterfront hotels. One of the most notable spots, the Argyle Hotel, formed the Cuban Giants in 1885, recognized as the country's first professional Black baseball team. As the resort era faded over the twentieth century, the grand hotels gave way to year-round residential neighborhoods, leaving behind a rich collection of historic homes and a strong sense of community pride.

Downtown living and easy commuting are major draws for newcomers. The Babylon station serves as a key hub on the Long Island Rail Road, giving commuters frequent direct trains into Manhattan and Brooklyn. Back in town, Deer Park Avenue and Main Street are filled with locally owned coffee shops, bakeries, casual pubs, fine dining, and the historic Argyle Theatre for live stage shows.
