Bad Axe sits right in the center of Michigan's Thumb, serving as the county seat and everyday service hub for Huron County. With around 3,000 residents, it is the primary stop for people in surrounding farming communities heading in for groceries, medical appointments, government offices, and local dining. The memorable name dates back to 1861, when surveyors clearing a trail found a beat-up axe at their campsite and marked the location on their map. Today, downtown is anchored by the historic county courthouse, local shops, and a friendly, practical pace of daily life.
