About Bad Axe

Bad Axe is the Huron County seat in Michigan's Thumb, a compact city that serves as the commercial hub for the upper Thumb. The 2020 census counted 3,021 residents. The name sounds like a dare, but the local story is wonderfully literal: surveyors camping here in 1861 found a badly damaged axe, marked the place as Bad Axe Camp, and the name stuck. Bad Axe grew into the county seat and still sits near the center of Huron County's farm-and-lake geography. Downtown is where the county-seat job becomes visible—courthouse offices, shops, the library, and the everyday errands that pull people in from smaller communities.

The Bad Axe Area District Library keeps an old axe head on display, so the town's strangest bit of name lore has a physical prop. Bad Axe's local scoop is a Thumb crossroads with a government role, a practical main street, and a name locals can tell in one sentence: somebody found a beat-up axe, and Michigan got a city out of it.
