Bailey's Crossroads, VA

Residents helped redefine two Bailey's Crossroads institutions in 2024. Fairfax County renamed the community center for Minnie H. Peyton, a Springdale matriarch, and the library became Culmore Community Library after residents requested a geographically meaningful name. The 14,420-square-foot library has served the area since 1961 and specializes in foreign-language materials. The Minnie H. Peyton Community Center is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Its indoor spaces include a gym, fitness room, art room with a kiln, technology lab, game lobby, and senior center; outdoor facilities include courts, a baseball diamond, playground, pavilion, and amphitheater. Transit and density make those institutions part of a larger daily network. Since June 2026, Metrobus A49 service has begun at 5 a.m. and operated in both directions during weekday rush hours, adding westbound morning trips to Culmore and eastbound afternoon trips to Metro Center.

Bailey's Crossroads covered only 2.05 square miles yet had 24,749 residents in the 2020 census, a density of about 12,067 residents per square mile. Estimates covering 2020 through 2024 show that 49.6 percent of residents were foreign-born and 62.2 percent of people age five or older spoke a language other than English at home. Owner occupancy was 48.0 percent, the median owner-occupied value was $416,600, median gross rent was $2,021, and workers' mean travel time was 27.5 minutes. Across those same years, the poverty estimate was 22.5 percent and 22.7 percent of people under 65 lacked health insurance. Those figures give added practical weight to the center's long hours, the library's language holdings, and direct rush-hour bus service.
