Baileys Harbor, WI

Baileys Harbor is a Door County census-designated place within the Town of Baileys Harbor on the Lake Michigan side of the peninsula. Captain Justice Bailey found shelter here during a violent 1848 storm, and the harbor took his name. The settlement became the peninsula’s first established village, then a logging camp, shipping point, and original county seat. Range lights built at the harbor entrance in the 1850s helped guide lake traffic, and steamboats later docked near what is now Anclam Park.

Today, the harbor’s map is shared by the town marina, Anclam Park, the range lights, Cana Island Lighthouse, and the natural lands around The Ridges Sanctuary. The Ridges protects a large ridge-and-swale landscape formed by former Lake Michigan shorelines and remains a major center for trails, birding, research, and environmental education. Town Hall and Highway 57 handle the practical connections, while farms, wetlands, and seasonal lake traffic keep the community tied to both land and water. Baileys Harbor’s local scoop is that the protected landscape is part of the town’s working history, not a separate backdrop.
