Baileyton, AL

Baileyton had 649 residents in 2020, in northeastern Cullman County along State Route 69. Robert Bailey, a farmer from Georgia, settled here in 1870 and put down more than a home: he ran a cotton gin, and the first Methodist church met at his house. A post office arrived in the early 1880s, followed by the first school around 1885 and a new school building in 1916. Early businesses included another cotton gin, a sawmill, a gristmill, and several general stores.

The town was incorporated in 1973, and its municipal boundary reaches from the Route 69 corridor toward State Route 67. That location keeps Baileyton connected to Cullman and the farming communities spread across the county’s northeast corner. Baileyton Cemetery, added to the Alabama Historic Cemetery Register in 2011, offers a more tangible record of the families who built the town through its first churches, schools, and mills. The old sequence of gin, mill, store, school, and post office still gives Baileyton’s history a clear local rhythm.
