Baileyville, IL

Baileyville is an Ogle County census-designated place west of Rockford, in Forreston Township. Its earlier settlement was called Cranes Grove, after Thomas Crane's log cabin and stagecoach stop. Travelers heading toward Galena and its lead mines could change horses there. The Illinois Central Railroad reached the area in the 1850s, and the settlement shifted toward the tracks.

Orville, Ransom, and Samuel Bailey arrived from Vermont, manufactured farm machinery, and gave the community its later name. Their Morse Self Binder is part of the local industrial story, while the 1858 plat brought a hotel, stores, churches, a school, and a post office into the railroad settlement. Baileyville was never incorporated, but its Baptist and Reformed churches, historic homes, and post office preserve the outline of a place that once served travelers, farmers, and rail passengers. Forrestville Valley School District now connects the community to the wider area. The old rail corridor still sets the community's north-south orientation along the county road grid.
