Bairdford, PA

Bairdford began as a West Deer Township coal-mining town in Allegheny County, built around company houses and the mine that employed their residents. The mine closed permanently in 1953, changing Bairdford quickly from a mining settlement into a residential community. In 1947, many families bought their company houses, and the township accepted the company streets as public roads, a change that helped the old mining neighborhood continue after extraction ended. The former post office and confectionery had served as a social center, and the town’s commercial core remained small.

Bairdford Park now occupies 94 acres in the former mining town and gives the area a major present-day civic use. It hosts Deer Lakes youth baseball, soccer, and softball, with fields, tennis and basketball courts, a dek hockey court, volleyball, playgrounds, picnic areas, a pavilion, and a winter ice rink. Deer Lakes Park adds fishing, trails, picnicking, and a water park nearby. Bairdford’s daily map is a clear before-and-after story: company housing and coal streets remain the setting, while parks, sports, and township services carry the neighborhood forward.
