About Ballenger Creek
Ballenger Creek Park and its namesake trail give this community south of Frederick a continuous recreation corridor rather than a single neighborhood playground. The county park combines ball fields, soccer and multipurpose fields, a synthetic-turf field, barrier-free play equipment, a dog park, fishing and water access, picnic shelters, volleyball, community gardens, and a bicycle workstation. Its own paths total 1.74 paved miles and 0.97 mile of natural surface; the separate Ballenger Creek Linear Trail extends 4.24 paved miles. Gardeners can rent 12-by-12-foot plots from mid-March through October, with water, initial soil preparation, and compost service supplied by Frederick County. Organized sports, dog walking, fishing, gardening, and longer rides therefore share one public corridor. The surrounding census-designated place is part of Frederick County’s primary growth sector. County planning documents describe the wider Ballenger Creek area as a fragmented mix of residential, employment, and industrial land, with housing predominant; that helps account for a landscape of subdivisions, apartment communities, business parks, shopping centers, and major roads rather than a traditional municipal center.
Transit changed on July 6, 2026, when the county introduced the hourly 15 Connector between Kingsbrook Crossing and the Downtown Frederick Transit Center and revised the hourly 10 Connector toward the Golden Mile area. County buses are fare-free, and the new route added stops within Ballenger Creek instead of requiring every downtown trip to begin with a transfer. The 2020 population was 24,999, up from 18,274 in 2010. During 2020–2024, 25.7 percent of residents were under 18, 20.5 percent were foreign-born, and 24.6 percent of people age five or older spoke a language other than English at home. Owner occupancy was 64.7 percent, and workers’ mean travel time was 32.5 minutes.
