Ballinger, TX

Ballinger is the Runnels County seat in West Texas, with 3,619 residents in the 2020 census. The city was founded in 1886 when the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway built west from Brownwood, and the site won the railroad terminal contest because it had a better water supply than the original county-seat contender, Runnels City. The original layout reserved a courthouse square and public park from the start, and downtown still carries nineteenth-century buildings with shops and restaurants. Ballinger sits where the Edwards Plateau gives way to the Southern Plains, with the Colorado River and Lake Ballinger adding water to an otherwise wide-open regional map.

The courthouse, Ballinger Independent School District, Bearcats athletics, local businesses, and county services keep the center useful beyond office hours. Ballinger City Park stretches along Lake Ballinger, giving the city a spot for fishing, picnics, and time outside town streets. The surrounding ranch and farm country keeps Ballinger in a county-seat role, while Brownwood, San Angelo, and Abilene are the larger destinations for regional trips. Ballinger is a railroad-born West Texas city with a courthouse square, a lake park, and a downtown that still shows how carefully the original town was laid out.
