Baltic, SD

Baltic is a Minnehaha County city on the Big Sioux River about 15 miles north of Sioux Falls. The 2020 census counted 1,246 residents. The place began as St. Olaf, was laid out in 1881, and briefly carried the name Keyes before becoming Baltic. A railroad, a dam, and a flour mill gave the town its first working center, while the river and surrounding farm country still set the shape of the place. The river also gives the city a clear north-south reference when roads fan out.

River Park sits west of the Big Sioux with ballfields, a playground, fishing, camping, and room for seasonal gatherings. Baltic School District keeps elementary, middle, and high school campuses close to town, and River Park Days brings a parade and park events each July. Sioux Falls is the larger regional pull, but Baltic keeps its own river-and-rail identity. Baltic's local scoop is a small city where the Big Sioux, a school district, and an old mill town grid still meet.
