About Bangor
Bangor is a village on the La Crosse River between La Crosse and Sparta, with Interstate 90 running nearby. The 2020 census counted 1,437 residents in the village. Bangor began in 1854, and the La Crosse and Milwaukee Railroad reached the valley in 1858, turning the settlement into a commercial stop. The village’s downtown still carries that history: the Bangor Commercial Historic District gathers turn-of-the-century retail and service buildings along Commercial Street, most rebuilt after an 1899 fire.
The practical center is still easy to find. Village Hall also serves as the community center, and the municipal utility, post office, board meetings, local businesses, and community events all work from that small civic core. The La Crosse River and the I-90 corridor connect Bangor to the larger La Crosse area, while the historic commercial block keeps the village’s own scale visible. Bangor’s daily map still follows the old pattern: river, rail, and a commercial block serving nearby farms and homes.
