Bangs, TX

Bangs is a Brown County city on US 67 and 84, six miles west of Brownwood, with a name that sounds like a nickname but comes from the Samuel Bangs survey. The railroad made the town: the Santa Fe line and depot arrived in the late 19th century, and by 1892 Bangs had a post office, school, eight businesses, and about fifty residents. When the town incorporated in 1915, it had four churches, a bank, a weekly newspaper, and 600 people. Passenger trains ended in 1965, but the highway still runs through the middle of town.

Today Bangs remains tied to Brownwood for county-seat errands while keeping its own school district and local calendar. The Bangs Independent School District grew from a 1927 district that later absorbed nine neighboring districts; city events and the Bangs Business Association keep activity centered along the same small-town streets. The local read is rail town turned highway town: a stop named for a survey, a depot that set the first pattern, and US 67/84 doing the everyday connecting.
