Bardwell, TX

Bardwell sits at the junction of State Highway 34 and Farm to Market Road 984 in southeastern Ellis County, just west of Bardwell Lake and within easy reach of Ennis and Waxahachie. The community began in the early 1880s when John W. Bardwell built a cotton gin south of the present townsite. A school, Baptist church, Methodist church, and post office followed, giving the settlement its first local institutions.

In 1907 the Trinity and Brazos Valley Railway reached the area, and the gin and town moved toward the tracks. Cotton then filled Bardwell with three gins, banks, groceries, dry goods stores, a gristmill, a lumberyard, a newspaper, and summer singing and revival gatherings. Drought, the Depression, and a highway rerouting changed that commercial rhythm; the Bardwell school later joined Ennis schools in 1958. Today Ennis ISD serves local students, while Highway 34, the lake, farm roads, and the remaining churches and small businesses shape everyday life. Bardwell is a town that physically moved to meet transportation, then stayed rooted after the traffic patterns changed.
