Baring, WA

Baring is a King County census-designated place in the South Fork Skykomish valley, with 255 residents in the 2020 census. U.S. 2 runs through the settlement about 23 miles west of Stevens Pass, along a remarkably flat three-mile stretch known as the Baring Straight. Skykomish lies seven miles southeast, and Everett is 41 miles northwest. The river, mountain slopes, cabins, and highway make Baring feel like a linear settlement in a narrow Cascade corridor.

The place began as Salmon and was being called Baring by 1909. Its story follows the transportation routes over Stevens Pass: the Great Northern Railway reached the valley in 1893, early roads followed the rail line, and local residents formed a Good Roads Club in 1912 to push for a cross-Cascades highway. The historic Baring Bridge crosses the South Fork Skykomish to reach homes on the far bank; built in 1930, it is a King County landmark and National Register property. Baring is a small mountain settlement whose identity is tied to one river crossing and the routes that connect the valley.
