Barker Heights, NC

Barker Heights is a Henderson County community wedged between Hendersonville and East Flat Rock, with creeks and old wetlands still shaping its map. The area was part of Theodore G. Barker's Brookland Estate, where he drained the Barker swamps to create a large farm and one of the county's early dairies. Later, workers who held jobs in Hendersonville's textile mills and businesses settled on the subdivided land. Bat Fork Creek, King Creek, and Mud Creek meet or border the community, and the Oklawaha Greenway runs through the wetland country. Barker Heights is an unincorporated place whose history moves from estate, swamp, and dairy to neighborhood.
