About Barrackville

Barrackville is a Marion County town settled in 1767 by William Galloway “Indian Billy” Ice and named for early settler John Barrack. Its best-known landmark is the Barrackville Covered Bridge, a 148-foot single-lane Burr truss built in 1853 over Buffalo Creek. The bridge was spared during the Jones-Imboden Raid after members of the Ice family helped persuade the raiders, and it is now listed on the National Register and part of the Civil War Trail. Barrackville is an old creek town with a bridge story that does a lot of local talking.
