Bass Lake is a mountain resort community and census-designated place in Madera County, California. Located within the Sierra National Forest fourteen miles south of Yosemite National Park, the enclave of about five hundred residents is centered around a reservoir created by the 1910 Crane Valley Dam. Originally a mid-nineteenth century lumber center with a sawmill built in 1854, Bass Lake became a popular tourist destination that drew half a million annual visitors by 1955.
