Bassett, VA

Bassett’s story is tied to the Smith River, a rail line, and a furniture company that grew out of the same family. Bassett Furniture was organized in 1901 and began making furniture in 1902, turning local timber into bedroom furniture and building a company complex that shaped the Henry County community. The town sits along the Smith River, and the R. L. Stone House overlooks both downtown and the furniture complex, a useful reminder of how tightly the company and town were linked. Bassett began as part of Horsepasture and later became a distinct industrial community. The river, rail corridor, and factory history still give the place its outline.
