About Basye

Basye is a census-designated place in Shenandoah County at the foot of Bryce Mountain. The 2020 census counted 1,374 residents. The community was once listed as Basye-Bryce Mountain and grew out of the older Orkney Springs area. Its name comes from the Basye family, whose cemetery remains near the golf course, so the family name is still literally part of the local landscape. The roads curve between pasture, woods, and second homes, with the mountain close enough to set the weather. Snow and summer heat both make the ridge part of the conversation.

Bryce Resort, the golf course, and the roads through the Shenandoah Valley give Basye a four-season feel without making it a traditional town center. The nearby general store and gas stop serve the wider valley, while Orkney Springs keeps the older resort story close at hand. Basye is a small mountain community with a family cemetery by the fairways, a resort on the ridge, and a name that came from people who lived here.
