About Battle Creek
Battle Creek is a Madison County city in the Elkhorn River Valley, named for a fight that never happened. In 1859, General John Milton Thayer’s territorial militia and U.S. troops came after reports of raids on settlers; the Pawnees surrendered before the attack. The town was laid out in 1874 near Battle Creek, about a mile above its junction with the Elkhorn, and Nebraska 121 now runs along the west side toward U.S. 275. Battle Creek is a northern Nebraska city whose map joins prairie creek, river valley, highway, and a story built around a near-battle.
