Battle Ground, WA

Battle Ground's name records a battle that did not happen. In 1855, members of the Klickitat tribe fled internment near Fort Vancouver, and a volunteer company led by Captain William Strong followed them into central Clark County. Strong reached an agreement with Klickitat leader Chief Umtuch for the group to return, but Umtuch was killed before the return. Strong withdrew his troops so the community could mourn, and the group later kept its agreement. Critics mocked him for avoiding violence, calling the place Strong's Battle Ground; the shortened name remained. The settlement incorporated as a town in June 1951 with 742 residents and became a code city in 1975. More than 200 acres of municipal parkland distribute recreation across the growing city. Fairgrounds Park, on the former Clark County Fair site, now contains the Battle Ground Community Center, baseball and softball fields, and a 25,000-square-foot skate-and-bike park.

Florence Robison Park pairs a neighborhood recreation area with more than five acres of ponds, wetlands, and paved paths, while Kiwanis Park contains the Battle Ground Veterans Memorial. The Battle Ground Community Library adds meeting and study rooms, a seed library, creative tools, and the Swift Art Gallery. In January 2026, branch programs included an erhu performance for Lunar New Year, baby and preschool storytimes, a children's book group, and preschool outreach. The city's recurring calendar uses several other shared spaces for Boo Bash, a holiday tree lighting, a pooch parade, and parks celebrations; its August 2026 National Night Out was scheduled at Chief Umtuch Middle School with music, public-security demonstrations, children's activities, and community organizations.
