Baxter Springs, KS

Baxter Springs sits on the western bank of the Spring River where southeast Kansas meets the edge of the Ozarks. U.S. 69 Alternate and U.S. 166 meet in town, and U.S. 400 bypasses it to the northeast, so the city's geography is tied to routes as much as to the river. The older map reaches back to Osage movement through the region and the Black Dog Trail, then forward through cattle trade, Civil War history, and lead-and-zinc mining in the four-state area.

Today the Baxter Springs Heritage Center and Museum ties those layers together in exhibits that run from Native American history to Route 66. Its archive holds regional documents and newspapers, giving the city a place to keep the four-state story close at hand. The museum also remembers the Baxter Springs Whiz Kids, the local team for which Mickey Mantle played before his professional career. Baxter Springs USD 508 serves local students, so school, river, museum, and highway meet within the same small-city map.
