Bay Point, CA

Bay Point recovered a historic name by local vote in 1993, ending decades in which the Contra Costa County community was called West Pittsburg; an earlier name was Bella Vista. The unincorporated census-designated place occupies the southern shore of Suisun Bay, west of Pittsburg and northeast of Concord, near the meeting of the San Francisco Bay Estuary and Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta. Its population was 23,896 in the 2020 census. State Route 4 crosses Bay Point, while the Pittsburg/Bay Point BART station sits just outside its boundary in Pittsburg. The station is on BART's Yellow Line and includes a transfer platform for Antioch-bound trains, giving Bay Point a direct connection to the regional rail system even though the station itself is in the neighboring city. Public facilities are distributed among several local and regional agencies. The Ambrose Recreation and Park District operates nearly 29 acres at nine sites, including ballfields and basketball courts at Ambrose Center Park, neighborhood play areas, and the pool at Ambrose Aquatic Center.

Bay Point Library has occupied space at Riverview Middle School since a 1994 partnership between Contra Costa County Library and Mount Diablo Unified School District. Its adult, teen, children's, and Spanish-language collections are accompanied by public computers, internet access, and a Homework Help Center. At the water, Bay Point Regional Shoreline protects nearly 150 acres of marsh and open space at the estuary-delta transition. A restoration and access project completed in December 2020 added habitat work, potable water, improved restrooms, accessible trails, interpretive panels, and overlooks. The park entrance also provides picnic facilities and the trailhead for a 1.1-mile loop, while shoreline access supports fishing, birding, and nature study.
