Bayard, NE

Bayard is a Morrill County city on U.S. 26 in western Nebraska, about 25 miles east of Scottsbluff. The 2020 census counted 1,140 residents. Main Street carries the highway through a landscape of irrigated fields, livestock country, and the North Platte River valley. The North Platte supplies the valley’s irrigation story, while U.S. 26 handles most through traffic. Chimney Rock stands about three and a half miles south, so one of the most recognizable Oregon Trail landmarks is part of Bayard’s immediate map.

The original Bayard was established in 1888, then moved to its present site so it could sit on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad. The village incorporated in 1890 and became a second-class city in 1917, the same period when the Great Western Sugar Company built a large factory nearby. Sugar production helped the town grow; agriculture still supplies the everyday work around it. Bayard is a highway-and-rail city with Chimney Rock on the horizon and farm country at every edge.
